Wayne Leroy Higley

Wayne Leroy Higley of McCook, formerly of Stratton passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was 88 years old. Wayne was born in Stratton, Nebraska to parents Delbert and Ruth (Harrison) Higley. He graduated from Stratton High School in 1945. Wayne entered the US Air Force on March 21, 1951 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on August 1, 1952. Wayne was united in marriage to Marjorie Lucille (Miles) in Stratton on July 2,1950. To this union six children were born. They made their home in Stratton where Wayne was employed by Miller Manufacturing and then International Transport as a truck driver hauling freight from coast to coast and Mexico to Canada. He was a member of the Stratton American Legion and Good Sams RV Club. He took pride in his yard raising a large garden every year. He also enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing especially for crappie and catfish and also trout fishing in Colorado. He and Lucille enjoyed 13 years wintering in Yuma, Arizona and three years in Orlando, Florida. Preceding him in death were his parents, Delbert Higley and Ruth Richards; son, Ronald; sister, Dorothy Loop; grandson, Michael Vrbas; great-grandson, Braeden Vrbas; daughter-in-law, Janet Higley; and sons-in-law, Bill Brennan and Ron Shepard. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Higley of McCook; daughters, Cheryl Brennan of Stratton and Marjorie Shepard of Mccook; sons, Richard Higley of Culbertson, Donald Higley and Michael Donovan of Washington, DC and James Higley of Palm Springs, CA; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Memorials may be given in his name.
