Walter Eugene Schwab age 78, passed away in his home surrounded by family, on April 18, 2019. He was born in Soldier, Kansas on June 29, 1940 to Emanuel and Bernice (Area) Schwab. He attended Norcatur grade school and graduated from Decatur Community High School with the class of 1958. Walt was united in marriage to Linda Ann Ayers in Oberlin, KS on August 1960 and to this union three children were born, Walter Edward, Shirley Marie and Alice Ann. He married Sandra Allen in May 1995 and to this union two children were born, Kevin Michael and Kelsey Diane. Walt then married LeAnna Helm on May 3, 2008 at the Lund Covenant Church in Oberlin, KS. Walt was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in McCook, NE. He and LeAnna both enjoyed traveling abroad and experienced the many sights and sounds of Alaska, Hawaii and Switzerland. Walt grew up on a farm in the Lyle, KS community. He helped his father with the cattle and the farming. During his high school years, he worked at the Fifth Wheel Gas Station in Oberlin, KS. In the mid 60s, he worked for Corder Well Drilling and in the late 70s and early 80s he worked for Halliburton Oil Company. In the early 70s, he began selling Bernina sewing machines and repairing all makes & models of sewing machines & sergers for the next fifty years. For several years, he was one of the top ten salesmen for Bernina of America. Walter continued to repair sewing machines & sergers until his health prevented him from working. To most people, he was known as "the sewing machine man". He loved being around people and especially his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emanuel and Bernice; brothers, William and Robert. Walt is survived by his wife LeAnna; and sons, Walter Edward, and wife, Rachelle Schwab, Hays, KS, Kevin Schwab, McCook, James, and wife Ginnie Dempewolf, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Daniel, and wife, Jolene Dempewolf, Oberlin, Andrew, and wife Jenna Dempewolf, Gorham, KS; daughters, Shirley and husband, Delvin Bader, Codell, KS, Alice, and husband Clayton Hunt, Wimauma, FL, Kelsey Schwab, and Jesse Sensenig, Trenton; sister, Dorothy Cochran, Oberlin, KS; Vera, and husband, Dean Dack, McCook; brothers, Charlie and wife, Pat Schwab, Scott City, KS, John and wife Phyllis Schwab, Kearney, NE; sister-in-law, Karen Carpenter, Norton, KS; 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; his faithful companions, Callie Sue and Lexi Ann. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in McCook, NE with Pastor Jeff Donelan officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, April 22, 2019 at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., Oberlin, KS. Memorials may be left in Walters name to Hospice Care of McCook, Nebraska.
