Vera Janece Cumming

Vera Janece Cumming, age 89, of McCook, departed this life on January 27, 2016 at the CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She was born November 5, 1926 in her great-grandmother Rebeccas home mile north of Danbury, NE. She was the first child of William and Thelma (Axtell) Hindman. Vera was raised during the Great Depression on several farms north of Danbury before moving to her grandma and grandpa Axtells farm during her school years. Vera graduated from Danbury High School in 1944 and attended McCook College for one year. Vera married Ronald R. Cumming on March 9, 1946, about three months follow his return from the Pacific theatre of WWII. They were married 63 years. Ronald preceded her in death in September 13, 2009. To this union four children were born: Tom, Rhonda, Rick and Scott. Vera was a homemaker and a farm wife, with the exception of working at Macfees Veterinary Clinic and the Danbury COOP where she was the bookkeeper. Vera retired from the CO-OP in the 1990s. Vera was active in the Danbury community where she was the village Clerk for 40 years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors of America and Eastern Star Eureka Chapter 86 of McCook. Vera loved working in her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens until she moved to Willow Ridge in 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronald, sister, Verda Baker; and sister-in-law, Jean Hindman. Vera is survived by her daughter Rhonda (Bill) Berger of Kearney; three sons, Thomas (Kathy) of Highland Ranch, CO; Richard (Deb) of Danbury and Scott (Sue) of Finksburg, MD; brother Kenneth (Marsha) Montgomery of Desoto, TX , 13 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Memorials may be given in her name. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Presbyterian Church in Danbury with Keith Theobald officiating. Interment will be in the Danbury-Marion Cemetery. Visitation
