Twila Nadine Brown, age 91, passed away in McCook surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 1, 2019. Twila was born on July 25, 1928 at Hayes Center, Nebraska to parents, Clarence Alfred and Hazel H. (Hayward) Richter. She graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1946. Twila started her long career at McCook Community College where she met her future husband, Dean Brown, a Korean War Veteran who was returning to school after serving our country. They were married on June 22, 1957; a marriage that would celebrate 52 years before Deans sudden passing on January 22, 2010. The couple moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where Twila worked at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. In 1960, the couple moved to San Diego. Twila joined the biology department of University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 1965, after working at California Western University (now USIU) for four years. She started as a receptionist but was soon promoted to Purchaser, placing orders for the research-intensive faculty, which numbered ten Professors at the time. She ordered everything from nuts, to automobiles, snakes, rodents, and the list was endless. Twila also gained the reputation of being a fabulous cook, known mostly for her chocolate chip coffee cake on campus. She was known as a good friend, confidante, and sometimes a surrogate mother to many in her department. After twenty-four and one-half years of outstanding service to the Department of Biology Twila retired January 5, 1990. The family will remember Twila for sharing her abilities to cook and entertain especially through the holidays, beach parties, and the couple traveling in their RV. Twila returned to McCook to be close to her family. Preceding her in death were her husband, Dean Brown; parents, Clarence and Hazel Richter; sister, Norma Richter; and niece Paula J. Gonzales. Survivors include her sister, Verda Wegener of McCook; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be given in her name to the McCook Humane Society. https://mccookhumanesociety.jdevcloud.com/ 100 South Street, McCook, NE 69001 Visitation will Friday, September 6, 2019, at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel from 10:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. to greet friends.
