Thelma May (Tucker) Walter, 91, passed away on April 11, 2018 at Hillcrest Nursing home in McCook, NE with her family at her side. Thelma was born on March 7th, 1927 in a sod house north of Hayes Center, NE. She attended a one room school house one mile from their house that she walked to everyday. After school she and her siblings had a lot of chores to do. They milked cows, fed baby calves, packed in coal and cobs for heat and water from an outside well. They then moved to the McCook area. When the Air Base opened Thelmas Mom would go get soldiers on Sunday for dinners. That is where Thelma met Howard Brown. They were married on October 11, 1944. To this union were born two children Gary and Sandra. Thelma and Dick met in 1954. They were married on July 24, 1955. They spent a wonderful 62 years together. This union brought two more sons, Steve and Tim. Thelma started working at St. Catherines Hospital in 1952. She worked on the OB floor, in the delivery room and worked in the Nursery for 32 years. The last 8 years of work she was in charge of Central Service and helped in Out Patient Surgery. She was the first recipient of the Caring Kind Award given in 1978 at McCook Community Hospital. She loved working in the nursery and with the new mothers. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She would follow every activity they were involved in. She kept wonderful scrap books for each one with every clipping or memorabilia she could find. Thelma is preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Lynn Brown; her parents, Stanford and Zella Tucker; sisters, Mildred Beck, Lena Nickerson Mihm, Wilma Witman and Helen Cotton; brothers, Darryl and Delbert Tucker. Survivors include her husband, Richard; sons, Gary (Sue), Steven (Debra) and Timothy (Brenda); grandchildren, Chris Brown, Jeremy (Crystal) and Spencer Walter and Olivia (John) Huffman; great-grandchildren, Macy and Mackenna Brown, Evalyn Huffman and Landon Walter. Memorials may be given in her name to St. Judes Children Hospital or the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 3:00 PM till 7:00 PM at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel. Family will be present from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM to greet friends. Funeral Service will be Monday, April 16, 2018 at 10:30 AM with Pastor Jeff Kelley at Memorial United Methodist Church of McCook, NE. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery McCook, NE.
