Stephen Craig Mcconnell

Stephen C. McConnell, of McCook, passed away Monday, September 3, 2018, in his home surrounded by family. Born February 11th, 1944, to parents, Lauren James and Ella "Lucille" (Eskew) McConnell at Imperial, NE. He spent time growing up in Imperial before his family moved to the McCook area in the mid 50s. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1962 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he spent 10 years as a Sonarman. After leaving the Navy, Craig returned to the area working as a police officer for the Holdrege and McCook departments, as a deputy with the Red Willow County Sheriffs Office and with the Southwest Area Training Center. Before retiring, he worked security for Valmont Industries and served as a guardian for his good friend Jim. On July 13, 1965 he was united in marriage to Catherine Marie Sahm at St. Patricks Catholic Church in McCook. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Lauren and Lucille; daughter, Anne Marie; son, Stephen Ware; and sisters, Marralee McBee and Becky Lepper. He leaves behind his wife Kay; son, David; brother, Scott and wife Linda; sister, Jeanie Fallis; grandchildren, Colt, Evan and Brandi; the jewel of his eye, great-granddaughter, Stella Rose; and numerous nieces and nephews. A rosary will be held 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 9th at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel, McCook. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 10th at St. Patricks Catholic Church, McCook with Father Gary Brethour as celebrant. Internment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Nebraska with full military honors. Memorials may be given in his name to the Veterans charity which he was an Honorary Director; Listening Post Ayr, 616 H Street, Central City, Nebraska 68826.
