Stanley Giles Quigley was born September 5, 1920 at the T.K. and Celeste (Stonecypher) Quigley homestead northwest of Indianola, Nebraska to Earl E. and Anna Pauline (Tines) Quigley. He attended and was in the first graduating class of Red Willow school in 1938, and later in life served as a school board member. Stan enlisted into the United States Army Air Corps on October 13, 1942, at Fort Crook Nebraska. He was honorably discharged on December 11, 1945. While stationed in Fort Worth Texas, Stan met the love of his life, Mitty Arminta Huggins at a USO dance. They were married at The Church of Saint Patrick in Fort Worth on March 1, 1946. After honeymooning in Mexico, the couple returned to the family homestead near Indianola where Stan and Mitty raised their three children, Jacqueline, Scott, and Steve, along with many crops and numerous varieties of livestock. Stan loved his church, his family, his country, his community, and football. He was an active member of Saint Patricks Catholic Church and was a Knights of Columbus 4th degree. In 1958, Stan became a member of the American Legion Post 344 Mathias Colling Unit, actively serving for 62 years. He spent many hours in recent decades volunteering his time to visit fellow veterans in area nursing homes. Patriotism and education were important values to Stan, and he demonstrated them by frequently donating American flags and dictionaries to area school children. Stan, along with his family, farmed the land his grandfather homesteaded in the late 1800s. He was awarded a Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award in 1973 for the Quigley family contributing a century of service to Nebraska agriculture. In 1977 Ak-Sar-Ben recognized the Quigley family as an Honor Family. In the summer of 2017, just before his 97th birthday, Stan was still driving a tractor and cultivating the land. Stan was very active in his community, especially the BPOE Elks Lodge of McCook. He was a member of Lodge 1434 for 62 years, serving as exalted ruler of the McCook chapter and as a Nebraska State Elks exalted ruler. He was also chairman of the McCook Elks Lodge scholarship programs for many years. He became a member of the McCook Public Power District Rural Electric Association in 1985, serving on the board of directors for 32 years. Stan enjoyed many hobbies, including watching Nebraska Cornhusker football, Elks Club bingo, collecting coins and pens, hunting rattlesnakes, and teasing his grandchildren. Stan and Mitty have been Husker football season ticket holders since the early 1960s and were even able to travel to Hawaii in December 1971 to watch their beloved Huskers beat the Rainbow Warriors 45-3. Another of Stans favorite hobbies was organizing the annual ladies rolling pin throwing contest held at the annual Old Settlers picnic celebration in Indianola. Stan peacefully passed away on Thursday evening October 3, 2019 at his home at the age of 99 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Anna Quigley; his daughter, Jacque (Quigley) Baker in 2014; and his son, Scott Quigley in 2013.
