Shirley Jean Lichty, 84, of McCook, passed away Friday morning, April 15, 2022 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was born at home in Friend, Nebraska to Charles and Mildred (Schleis) Tenopir on April 22, 1937. She attended country school and went on to graduate from high school in Wilber, Nebraska. Shirley met Richard Lichty in March of 1956 and three weeks later, on April 12, 1956 the couple was married at the court house in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Shirley and Dick first settled in Lincoln, Nebraska prior to making their move to southwest Nebraska in 1961. They lived in Culbertson, Nebraska where Shirley kept busy caring for her growing family. Dicks work for the State of Nebraska required him to be gone quite often, at which times Shirley would also do the chores around the farm which included feeding and caring for the familys hogs. Shirleys love for people led her to waitressing at Bushs Restaurant and the Pow Wow Club. She kept a beautiful garden and loved her flowers. She was amazing in the kitchen; her potato dumplings, barbecue chicken on the grill, coleslaw, and potato salad are just a few of the countless meals that she used to show her love to those around her through food. Shirley loved music. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Culbertson and Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, after the family moved to McCook in 1989. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Eagles Auxiliary. She was an avid reader of magazines and would read each and every edition of the McCook Gazette from front to back often following up with family members to check if they had seen this or that? She was a loving and hardworking wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and she was so very proud of her family. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; and an infant son, Keith Ivan Lichty.
