Sharolyn Joan Hornkohl was born in McCook, Nebraska to Clarence Cecil Bales and Polly Delcina (Burgess) Bales. She attended school in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1953.
Sharolyn met and married Victor Courange in 1954, to this union five children were born. Sherry, Victor, and their growing family made a home in California where Sherry worked for Bellflower Hospital until 1984. Sherry moved back to McCook where she continued her career as a medical transcriptionist with Community Hospital in McCook. She worked for Community Hospital until her retirement at the young age of 80. On March 30, 1990, she married Cecil Hornkohl, they lived their entire married life in McCook.
Sherry and Cecil loved quilting and embroidering, and participating in craft shows together. She loved watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their activities. She watched American Idol religiously. She also loved shopping, sleepovers with grandchildren, up until the night before her death, and going to the senior center to have lunch with her friends.
Sharolyn was surrounded by family when she passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 90 years of age.
Sharolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Polly; husband, Cecil; sisters, Charlotte, Marie, Evelynn, and Ardith; brothers, Warren, Virgil, Bill, and Floyd; daughter, Vicki Courange; daughter-in-law, Char Courange; and grandson, Skylar Courange.
Survivors include her children: Mark (Jill) Courange of Redding California, Tom (Jolinda) Courange of Ontario, California, Rick Courange of Tempe, Arizona, and Michelle (Kurt) Proud of Bartley, Nebraska; grandchildren: Rebekah Courange, Tiffany (Jason) Jones, Ashley Courange, Courtney (Rick) Osbrink, Travis (Katie) Courange, Josh Brennan, Katey Courange, Gabby Courange, Jay (Ashly) Rosan, Krystal Courange, Kelsea (Danny) Perez, Megan (Bryan) Duckworth, Tiffany (Owen) Karre, Melissa Jacob, and Taryn Jacob; great-grandchildren: Paige Wolcott, Berkley Wolcott, Brayden Jones, Kaydence Jones, Bailey Ham, Teagan Ham, Logan Osbrink, Harlow Osbrink, Pearl Courange, Dax Courange, Jameson Brennan, Malakai Rosan, Jayce Rosan, Jerry Rosan, Andrew Courange, DJ Perez, Angel Perez, Ella Duckworth, Jace Duckworth, Harold Karre, and Nova Padilla; numerous nieces and nephews; and her friend, Cheryl Hamrick.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2025 from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Sharolyn's family will greet friends from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday Morning, March 14, 2025 at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Sharolyn's nephew, Steve Bales officiating. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook will follow services.
