Ervin Albert Schaffert of McCook passed away peacefully at home in Brookdale Assisted Living Monday, March 12, 2018. He was 94 years old. Ervin was born on the family farm near Bartley on September 30, 1923 to parents, John and Rose (Troester) Schaffert. As a child, he was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bartley. He attended school at Bartley where he graduated with the class of 1942. After graduation Ervin started farming in the Indianola community, a lifelong career he loved until the age of 80. On October 8, 1944 he was united in marriage to Vera M. Kisker. This union was blessed with two daughters, Sharon and Marcia. The family made their home on the farm near Indianola. Ervin became a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, Ash Creek, where he served on the executive board of Lutheran Laymens League, sang in the church choir, and served in various other facets of the church. Vera preceded him in death on June 8, 1970. On February 18, 1971 Ervin married Lillian (Ladd) Pickett at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Ash Creek. To this union Ervin welcomed step-daughter, Wendy, to his family. He continued to farm until his retirement. Lillian preceded him in death on November 28, 2007. Ervin enjoyed singing with the church choir and Barbershop, taking swimming lessons at the YMCA later in life, spending time on his farm and working with his livestock. Most of all he was a devout Christian and loved being with his children and grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Rose Schaffert; his two wives, Vera and Lillian; step-daughter, Lylis Emrich; step-son, Jerrell Pickett and wife, Thelma; and two brothers, Marion and Melvin Schaffert. Survivors include his two daughters, Sharon and husband, Larry Holst, of Independence, MO and Marcia and husband, Mick Yannacito, of Arvada, CO; step-daughter, Wendy and husband, Jim Reiners, of Indianola; step-son-in-law, Frank Emrich and wife, Linda, of Casa Grande, AZ; eight grandchildren, Aaron (Lisa) Holst, Heidi (Brian) Wituk, Micah (Sara) Holst, Josiah (Lisa) Holst, Stephan (Lynsay) Holst, Mark (Kerry) Yannacito, Marlo (Kendall) Barstad, and Matthew (Nicole) Yannacito; 20 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Memorials may be given in his name to KNGN Christian Radio, 38005 Road 717, McCook, NE 69001. Visitation will be Friday, March 16, 2018, 4:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel, McCook, with family present to greet friends. Funeral service will be Saturday, March 17, 2018, 10:30 a.m., at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Ash Creek rural McCook, with Pastor Justin Hildebrand officiating.
