Samuel L. Smith, age 86, formerly of Grand Island, NE, passed away at the Community Hospital of McCook, NE on January 8, 2023. He was born in Hitchcock County on December 12, 1936. He attended his first six years of elementary school in Trenton then moved to Culbertson where he graduated in 1955. On January 19, 1957, he was married to Gwen Patton and to this union four children were born: Scott, Brenda, Laura and Shelly. Sam later married Alice Randolph on June 18, 1989. Sam enjoyed camping, traveling over most of the United States. He was a member of the McCook Eagles, National Rifle Association, and an archery club. He enjoyed reloading and target shooting, hunting and fishing. Sam had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playing jokes. Sam was self-employed as a tax consultant at Sam Smith Tax Services. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice; stepdaughter, Tracy Slater; brother, Don and wife, Rosemarie Smith; brothers-in-law, Ted Collins and Gerald Hein. Sam is survived by his son, Scott and wife, Cheryl Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; three daughters, Brenda and husband, Rod Simmonds of Topeka, KS; Laura Parde of Trenton, NE; Shelly and husband, Mike Tietze of Ashland, NE; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; stepson, Trever and wife, Karen Hiatt of Brighton, CO; stepdaughter, Tamrah and husband, Lyle Straube of Lincoln, NE; ten step grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Hein of Fairfield Glade, TN; Betty Collins of Kingman, AZ. The family will have a Graveside service on Saturday, January 14, 2023, 2:00 PM at the Indianola Cemetery with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Friends may leave online condolences at herrmannfh.com. Memorials may be left in Sams name at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Roundup of Indianola following the committal service.
