Ruth Ellen Brosius

Ruth Ellen (Downing) Brosius, age 90, of McCook, Nebraska passed away Friday, April 14, 2017 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was born September 20, 1926 to Albert Ray and Minnie Ellen (Winters) Downing in rural Rawlins County, Kansas where she grew up. She attended school and graduated from Atwood High School in 1944. She continued her education by going to college in Halstead, Kansas where she studied to become at nurse. She met Don Burton and they were united in marriage and had a son, Kenneth Allen Burton. They later divorced. She worked in the Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in the late 1940s then moved to Wichita, Kansas and worked in Bucks Department Store in the 1950s. There she met Kenneth Brosius and they were married and later separated. In the 1960s she moved back to Atwood, where she and her son lived until the 1970s before moving to McCook in the 1980s. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Minnie Downing. Survivors include her son, Kenneth Burton and wife, Linda, of Great Bend, Kansas; two grandsons, Clay Burton of Parsons, Kansas and Jeremy Johnston of Augusta, Kansas; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be given in her name to the McCook Humane Society specifically for the cats. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 18, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Friends may go online at www.herrmannfh to extend words of condolences to the family.
