Bob was inducted into the US Navy on his 18th Birthday in 1944 and went to Farragut, Idaho. He served in the Pacific and Asiatic Theatres. He served on the USS Oakland. Bob was Honorably Discharged from the US Navy on May 18, 1946 at Bremerton, Washington.
Bob returned to Cambridge to farm. He was united in marriage to Norma Johnson on November 9, 1947. The couple celebrated 66 years of marriage in November. The couple retired and moved to Cambridge after 45 years on the farm. Bob was an active member of the Wilsonville Lions, the VFW and later the Cambridge American Legion. He served on the Wilsonville School Board, Hendley COOP, and was a 60 year member of the Methodist Church. He was currently the President of the Furnas County Weed Board. Bobs passion was his golf. He was a main stay on the golf course playing every chance he could. He and the other senior golfers were known at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation Golf Tourney as part of the Rest Home Rowdies. Bob volunteered to help during many of the High School Golf Tournaments at the Cross Creek Golf Links. He loved to share his love of the game to young players.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter: Brenda Smith; a grandson: Trevor Smith; a sister: Joyce and husband Ed Horner; sister-in-laws: Hazel Smith and Phyllis Smith.
Bob is survived by his wife: Norma of Cambridge; 2 daughters: Barbara and husband Darrel Muehling of Pullman, Washington; Virginia and Mark Johnson of Kearney, Nebraska; 2 sons: Roger and wife Linette both of Wilsonville, Michael Smith of Wilsonville and Julie Smith of Kearney; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Paul Smith of Cambridge, NE; Duane Smith of Papillion, NE; Norris and wife Marie of Omaha, NE; 3 sisters: Joan and Tom Dempster of Dumfries, VA; Marjorie and husband Robert Perkins of Salinas, CA; Carole and husband Norman Banzhaf of Lexington, NE.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday December 18, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Cambridge, NE with Pastor Jeff Wulf officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Military Honors will be by the Cambridge American Legion. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM till 6 PM on Monday, Tuesday from 9:00 AM till 6:00 PM. Memorial may be left in Bobs name to: the Cross Creek Golf course, Trinity United Methodist Church or the Tri-Valley Medical Foundation.
