Rodney Lee Berryman

Rodney Lee Berryman, 77, of McCook, passed away after a long battle with cancer on August 30, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his family. The celebration of Rod's life will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Pastor Doug Griger officiating. Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook is in charge of arrangements. An interment will be held at the Cozad Cemetery in Cozad, Nebraska, at 2:30 PM. Rodney Berryman was born on March 2, 1938 in Cozad, Nebraska to Charles and Joyce (Webster) Berryman. Rod was the oldest of three children. Rod is survived by his wife, Carol, of McCook; daughter and son-in-law Traci and Bryan Loker of McCook; son and daughter-in-law Troy and Kelli Berryman of Norfolk, NE and grandchildren Logan and Emily Loker of McCook and Abby and Maggie Berryman of Norfolk. Other survivors include brother and sister-in-law Charles (Chuck) and Connie Berryman of Papillion, NE; sister and brother-in-law Kay and Gary Benge of Grant, NE; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Don and Ardith Butler of Kearney, NE. Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Joyce Berryman, and his In-laws Clarence and Lila (Gardner) Allen. Rod graduated from Cozad High School in 1956 and after serving in the United States Coast Guard, received his Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education from Kearney State College. In subsequent years he earned a Masters Degree and a Specialists Degree in school administration, and a degree in Educational Technology. Rod married Carol Allen on August 18, 1963 in Cozad, NE. Together, they spent 36 years in education, serving in schools throughout the state of Nebraska, including Chappell, Bellevue, St. Paul, and Albion. He finished his full-time career in education as the superintendent at Maywood Public School. After retiring as superintendent, Rod continued to serve Maywood as a bus driver and substitute teacher. He also taught math at Mid-Plains Community College after his retirement. He will be remembered as someone who cared about kids and their educations. Music was always a very important part of Rod's life. He enjoyed singing his entire life, from high school and college productions to performing with the local Prairie Statesmen Barbershop Chorus well into his seventies. Rod also enjoyed visiting Las Vegas, making more than 40 trips with his wife. Later in life, he also enjoyed technology, purchasing and repairing computers for friends. However, his greatest joy was attending the activities of his children and four grandchildren, as well as telling and listening to stories from his past. Memorials may be left in his name, given to the family, for designation at a later date. Memorial Service
