Roberta J "Bert" Brooks

Roberta J. 'Bert' Brooks age 79 of Bartley, passed away at the Cambridge Manor on Sunday, June 29, 2014. She was born on May 23, 1935 in Indianola, NE to Henry and Ethel M. (Junker) Schamel. Bert graduated from Indianola High school in 1953. On October 3, 1954 she was united in marriage to Gerald 'Geb' Brooks, he preceded her in death on August 4, 2000. Bert worked as the a school cook and later as a CNA at the Cambridge Manor. She was always pulling pranks on other employees and her friends. Bert loved her animals, not just domestic cats and dogs but wild animals. She would sit out her patio and feed all the wild animals: coons, opossum, deer, squirrels, coyotes and turkeys. Bert could hand feed many of the animals by hand. She was a member of the Kemper United Methodist Church of Bartley. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband 'Geb'; infant daughter: Denise Rae; sisters: Helen and husband Walt Walz; Elsie and husband Ewald Werschke; Iona and husband Gaylord Harned; Esther Sedlacek and a brother-in-law; Orville Stewart. Survivors include 3 daughters: Myra 'Mick' and husbands Scott Minnick of Bartley; Patti Brooks and Dave Hamling of Columbus, NE; Lisa and husband Doug Gartner of Lebanon, TN; 2 sons: Mike and wife Kim Brooks and Mark and wife Darlene Brooks both of Bartley; 14 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; Sister: Ruth Stewart of McCook, NE; 2 brothers: Donald 'Doc' Schamel; and her twin Robert 'Bob' Schamel of Stockton, KS. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 11:00 AM at the Bartley Cemetery with Bill Weaver officiating. Casket will be closed to the public. Family will greet friends at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary on Tuesday evening from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM.
