Robert Earl Gummere

Robert "Earl" Gummere of McCook, formerly of Stratton, passed away Monday, May 27, 2019 at Kearney Regional Medical Center. He was 84 years old. Earl was born on November 6, 1934 at Culbertson to parents, Ralph I. and Iris (McNiece) Gummere. He graduated from Stratton High School in 1952. After graduation, he moved to Pueblo, CO to pursue a degree in telegraphy. On April 20, 1957 he was united in marriage to Dorothy D. Wickizer on April 20, 1957 at the Stratton United Methodist Church. To this union a son, David, was born. They moved to Durango, CO where Earl was employed as a draftsman with the Bureau of Reclamation. They eventually moved back to the farm in the Stratton community. Earl loved the farm life especially working with his cattle. He also worked for the county as a maintainer operator for over 30 years, retiring at the age of 71. The couple most recently made McCook their home. Earl was a life-time member of the United Methodist Church and 40-year member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed playing cards, having coffee with the Stratton Coffee Club, and attending cattle auctions. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ralph and Iris Gummere; infant sister, Berniece; and brother Wallace "Wally" Gummere. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Gummere of McCook; son, David Gummere and wife, Juli, of McCook; brother, Beryl Gummere and wife, Sharon, of Stratton; sister-in-law, Gloria Gummere of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Matthew Gummere and Nicole (David) Siebrandt; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Memorials may be given in his name. Visitation will be Thursday, May 30, 2019, 10:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Family will be present from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. to greet friends.
