Richard Benton Hayes Jr.

Richard B. "Dick" Hayes, Jr., age 83 of Cambridge, NE died on Friday June 12, 2015 at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge. He was born in Orafino, Nebraska on October 21, 1931 to Richard B. Sr. and Mary Mae (Brown) Hayes. Dick attended the Earl School and Orafino country Schools. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1950. Growing up he was active in a Quartet that sang on KRVN radio.

Dick joined the United Stated Air Force on January 30, 1952 and was discharged on December 13, 1955. He was untied in marriage to Yvonne Price on September 23, 1952 at Orafino. After his discharge from the service Dick returned to Nebraska and farmed north of Cambridge for 42 years. They moved to Cambridge in 1999.

Dick was a life member of the EUB and later transferred membership to the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the United Methodist Men. He served on the COOP board, a member of the McCook Eagle, Elks, the William Wight Post of the VFW and the Cambridge American Legion Post #199. He was active member in the Honor Guard. Dick Loved to Farm and raise cattle. He was a family man, enjoying all his grandkids and kids sporting and school activities.

He is preceded in death by his parents: grandson: Craig Nelms; brother-in-law: Gene Messersmith; niece: Mary Jo Dutton.

Dick is survived by his wife: Yvonna of Cambridge; daughter: Sue Ann and husband Dann Nelms of Benkelman, NE; 2 sons: Davis and wife Linda Hays of Goldsboro, NC; Dallas and wife Teresa Hays of Greenwood, NE; 10 grandchildren; 13 Great Grandchildren; 1 sister: Eileen Messersmith of Hastings.

Funeral Services will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 11:00 am with Pastor Jeff Wulf officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery of Cambridge, NE. Military Honors will be held at graveside. Friends may leave on-line condolences at lockenour.com. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left in Dicks name to either the Cambridge American Legion Post or the Trinity United Methodist Church.
