Paul D. "Bud" Smith, age 89, of Cambridge, Nebraska passed away early Wednesday morning December 28, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.
He was born in Cambridge on October 12, 1927 to Charles and Eva (Perdue) Smith. Bud grew up on the farm south of Cambridge. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945.
Paul entered the US Army in 1945. He was stationed in Arkansas, Kentucky, South Carolina and Washington. He served as a MP at the end of his service and was honorably discharged in 1947.
He came back to Cambridge and worked on the installation of the water/sewer system. He later began working on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Downey on May 3, 1952. They had two sons Randy, born in 1955 and Ron, born in 1961. The couple bought a farm south of Cambridge in 1960. He and Phyllis made several additions to the original home and farmstead over the years. Bud and Phyllis loved to go to the Elks club on Saturday nights.
Bud was a dedicated farmer. He worked hard at planting, cultivating, irrigating, and harvesting various crops. He also raised hogs, cattle, and chickens. He very much appreciated the terrific neighbors that he had through the years. Bud never complained and was a better listener than talker. He never said anything bad about others except to once in a while mention that someone was a "little bit ornery." He enjoyed seeing his grandchildren play sports. He especially enjoyed seeing pictures of them on Facebook with his fancy new phone.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Phyllis; son, Ron; brother, Bob; a sister Joyce and her husband, Ed Horner; and sister-in-law, Hazel Smith.
He is survived by his son, Randy and his wife, Joan, of Kearney, MO and their three sons, Ryan and wife, Kali, of Columbia, MO, Tyler and wife, Ashley, of Kansas City, MO, and Colton and wife, Sarah, of Bettendorf, IA; daughter-in-law, Heidi Smith and her three children Katie, Gibson, and Gracie of Gretna.
