Paul Richard Confer, long-time resident and centurion of the Culbertson community, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. He was 100 years old. Paul was born on October 31, 1918, to Orman and Jessie (Huetson) Confer at Firth, Nebraska. The family moved to the farm south of Culbertson in 1919 where he grew up. He attended country school through eighth grade at School District #62 and graduated from Culbertson High School in 1936. On February 10, 1941, Paul entered the US Army serving with the 3rd Field Artillery Battalion. He served in England and France during World War II and was honorably discharged on June 9, 1945. After returning from the service, he started farming and ranching south of Culbertson on the home farmstead. In June of 1947, he married Zelma Skinner. She preceded him in death in 1973. In March of 1975, he was united in marriage to Lillian (Sparks) Desen. They lived on the same farm until his retirement. Paul served on the Culbertson Rural Fire Board for over 40 years. He was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church and served on church committees and boards over the years, as well as working on several remodeling and construction jobs at his church. He loved doing wood-working jobs, assembling grandfather clocks and items of furniture. He enjoyed teaching his young nephews about life on the farm and eventually turned his operation over to nephew, Robert Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orman and Jessie Confer; his wives, Zelma Confer and Lillian Confer; seven brothers and sisters and their spouses, Alice (Lynn) Wallen, Claude (Esther) Confer, Fay (Earl) Bailey, Merle (Dorothy) Confer, Gladys (Marvin) Graves, Norma (James) Bradshaw and Harold Confer. Survivors include nephews, Bob (Marie) Smith of Culbertson, Bobby (Becky) Johnson of Wichita, KS and Kent (Anne) Confer of McCook; sister-in-law, Dorothy Confer of San Antonio, TX; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends. Memorials may be given in his name.
