Ona Malleck was born on October 20, 1939, in Lebanon, Nebraska to Fay and Tena (Rhonke) Larson. Ona was a proud graduate of Lebanon High School, graduating with the class of 1957. Ona married Thomas Malleck in Indianola, Nebraska in 1958; they first made a home in Holdrege, Nebraska prior to settling in Indianola in 1958. Ona and Thomas divorced in 1988, but their life together created a family and legacy that will carry her memory for generations to come.
Throughout her life, Ona remained actively involved in her community, becoming a valued member of the St. Catherine Catholic Church Altar Society, the RV Mother's Club, and the Nebraska Clerk's Association.
Ona was a dedicated public servant who significantly impacted her community through her career at the City of Indianola clerk's office, beginning in 1974. In 1982, she ascended to the role of city clerk/treasurer, where her commitment and professionalism were highly regarded. Ona earned her Master Municipal Clerk certificate in 1999, a testament to her expertise and dedication to her profession. In recognition of her exemplary service, she received the honor of Nebraska Second Class City Clerk of the Year in 2000. After an impressive 40-year career with the city, Ona retired in 2014.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ona cherished her time spent with family, particularly enjoying playing, coaching, and watching sports—especially when her grandchildren were involved. Her skills in the kitchen were renowned, especially her famed potato salad, which was a beloved favorite among her family and friends.
Ona was surrounded by family when she passed away on November 23, 2025 at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska. She was 86 years of age.
Ona will be deeply missed by all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love for her community and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; brothers-in-law, Bernard Larue, Robert McConnell, James “Marvin” Malleck, Dennis “Pete” Malleck, Joseph Reed, and Daniel Bahl; sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Larson, Vonda Parrot, Judith Keith, Jane Bahl, Marilyn Malleck, and Judy Malleck.
Her memory will live on through her children: Michael K. Malleck of Indianola, Tammy (Craig) Brewster of Butte, Nebraska, Shawn (Michele) Malleck of Indianola, Brian (Carla) Malleck of Indianola, and Kimberly (Richard) Barnett of McCook; her grandchildren: Ashley Kurkowski, Brandon (Jordan) Malleck, Candace (Matt) Nelson, Brock (Paige) Brewster, Logan Brewster, Colin Brewster, Justin (Halee) Malleck, Shelby (Dylan) McConville, Cole Barnett, and Caylin Barnett; great-grandchildren: Kali Kurkowski, Leighton McConville, Kaiser McConville, Briggs McConville, Emory Brewster, Emma Malleck, Kylee Malleck, Allee Malleck, and Bella Malleck; brothers and sisters, Joan Larue of Oberlin, Kansas, Jeanette McConnell of Strasburg, Colorado, Lelah Lason of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Wayne Larson of Oberlin, Gloria (Ramon) Godtel of Roca, Nebraska, Jeannine Reed of Lincoln, Nebraska, Philip Malleck of Indianola, and Randy Keith of Indianola; as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Thursday evening, November 27, 2025 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianola. The family will great friends in the St. Catherine Catholic Church Fellowship Hall following the Rosary.
Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday morning, November 28, 2025 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Michael Houlihan celebrating. The family requests casual dress and preferably attire that supports your favorite sports team! Burial in the Indianola Cemetery will follow services.
In lieu of flowers; memorials in Ona's memory are suggested to the Indianola Baseball League (PO Box 301, Indianola, NE 69034) or the Southwest Schools Booster Club (PO Box 190, Indianola, NE 69034.
