Mitty Arminta Quigley

September 19, 1922 — November 2, 2019

Mitty Armenta (Huggins) was born September 19, 1922 in Godley, Texas to Chappel Loveless Huggins and Millie Lorene (McDonald) Huggins. She graduated from Granbury High School in Texas in 1940. Following graduation, Mitty worked for the Hood County Clerk in Granbury. Mitty met the love of her life, Stanley Giles Quigley, when she and her girlfriend Sammie Manning, attended a USO dance in Fort Worth, Texas. They were married at The Church of Saint Patrick rectory in Fort Worth on March 1, 1946. After honeymooning in Mexico, the couple returned to Stan's family homestead near Indianola, Nebraska. Mitty transitioned from big city life to country farm wife with ease, where she and Stan raised crops, livestock, and their three children: Jacqueline Ann, Scottie Gene, and Steven Gregg. Mitty was also known for her ability to perform a multitude of farming tasks, such as building fence, planting windbreaks, raising chickens, weeding fields, shooting snakes out of trees, and laying irrigation pipe. She had many talents some of which included fishing, baking angel food cakes and pies, sewing, crafting, genealogy, gardening, and teaching her grandchildren how to paint with watercolors. Mitty loved her church, her family, her country, and her community. She was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook for 73 years. She was a 4-H club leader in Red Willow county for a number of years. During many holiday seasons she was employed by DeGroff's wrapping Christmas presents. She enjoyed her time as a hot lunch cook at Red Willow schools during the early 1960s. She was a member of the BPOE Elks Lodge 1434 Does of McCook. In 1989, Mitty became a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, actively serving for 30 years. For 42 years she was a member of the 37th Star Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Regent, Vice-Regent, chapter Chaplain, and was especially noted for her beautiful centerpieces. Her great-great grandfather, Harvey Wilson, served in the Colonial Army and fought in the American Revolution. Mitty, along with Stan, spent many hours in recent decades visiting veterans in area nursing homes. Patriotism and education were also important values to Mitty, and she loved to donate American flags to area school children, teaching them about the importance of citizenship. Since early childhood, Mitty wanted to become an artist. She enrolled in McCook Community College art classes to develop her talents in order to paint God's creations. Among her favorite nature objects to paint were flowers, butterflies, fields of corn and wheat, old barns, and ladybugs. Mitty had an extensive collection of ladybugs, which can be found hiding in most of her paintings as her trademark. She was a member of the McCook Art Guild for 55 years, serving as President and in other offices. She participated in numerous juried shows and received awards at the local and state levels. Her beloved paintings can be found in both private and museum collections. Surrounded by family at her home, Mitty was reunited with Stan on November 2, 2019. Preceding her in death were parents, Chappel Loveless and Millie Lorene (McDonald) Huggins; husband of 73 years, Stanley Giles Quigley, who passed away October 3, 2019; brother-in-law Ronald Stoller; sisters Marie Winsett (Abren), Inez Whitehead (Olan), Lena May Huggins, and brothers Chappel Huggins Jr (Veda Mae), James Moses 'Bunk' Huggins, and Billy Jack Huggins; children Jacqueline Ann Baker in 2014 and Scottie Gene Quigley in 2013.
