Merlin Leroy Shaffer of Trenton passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. He was 69 years old. Merlin was born on October 6, 1948, in Stratton to parents, LaVerne "Dick" and Hilda (Nyp) Shaffer. Merlin grew up just south on the main street of Trenton. He attended Trenton schools where he played football. He graduated with the class of 1966. On June 12, 1970, he was united in marriage to Rita Ann Swayne at the Methodist Church in McCook. Together they made their home in Trenton until she passed away in 2013. Merlin loved the outdoors, animals, hunting, and fishing. He enjoyed sharing those hobbies with younger generations. Over the years he was an Archery and Gun Safety instructor for the Game and Parks. He was also a 4-H Shooting Sports instructor throughout several counties in southwest Nebraska. He had a passion for helping the youth and loved to attend their athletic games and activities. Preceding him in death were his parents, Dick and Hilda Shaffer; and wife, Rita Shaffer. Survivors include Aunts, Verdene Cantrall of Trenton and Mary and husband, Curt Williams, of Sun City, AZ; numerous cousins and extended family; a host of friends, including his beloved special lady friend, Colleen McVicker. The family will honor his wish to be cremated. There will not be a local service. Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of Trenton is entrusted with arrangements. Graveside Service
