Melva June Esch

Melva June (Pollmann) Esch, formerly of McCook, passed away at her home in West Lafayette, Indiana. She had just celebrated her 80th birthday. Melva was born on May 14, 1939, at Culbertson, Nebraska to parents, Henry Edward and Opal Maxine (Steffen) Pollmann. She graduated from Stratton High School with the class of 1957. On May 4, 1958, she was united in marriage to Harold Walter Esch. The union was blessed with four children, Kent, Michael, James and Barbara. They made their home on the family farm in the Ash Creek community. Melva was a busy homemaker, mother, and an integral part of the family farm. She was an active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church where she was a member of Lutheran Womens Missionary League (LWML), taught Sunday School, and helped make quilts for missions. She was a 4-H leader for many years and participated in the "Good Friend" program through Southwest Elementary School. Her many hobbies included crocheting, knitting, gardening both flowers and vegetables, and was an excellent seamstress. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she enjoyed attending their many activities. In 2016, Melva moved to University Place, Independent Living, in West Lafayette, IN where she was close to her daughter. She became quite involved while living there including being on the Spiritual Life Committee, lead Devotions, and member of the Busy Bees. She became the floor Representative for the Residents Council. Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Opal Pollmann; husband, Harold Esch on September 29, 2009; grandchildren, Andrew Esch and C. J. Esch; brother, Dewayne Pollmann; and brother-in-law, John Metzger. Survivors include her children Kent (Lisa) Esch of Lone Tree, CO, Michael (Barb) Esch of McCook, James (Lori) Esch of Georgetown, TX and Barbara (Ron) Schummer, of West Lafayette, IN; brother, Robert (Patsy) Pollmann of Minneapolis, MN; sisters, Kathy Metzger of Lexington and Jerry (Mel) Miller of McCook; sister-in-law, Nola Pollmann of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Vern (Sara) Esch of Indianola; ten grandchildren, Jennifer (Josh) Brown of Omaha, Lindsey (Chad) Stewart of Indianola, Adam Esch of Lone Tree, CO, Micaela (Jason) Remmert of Round Rock, TX, Anthony (Elissa) Esch of Liberty Hill, TX, Matthew (Kelsey) Esch of McCook, Bradley (Shelbi) Esch of Liberty Hill, TX, Lanay (Waylon) Christen of Anselmo, Ryan Schummer and Alex Schummer both of West Lafayette, IN; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Memorials may be given in her name. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 22, 2019, 1:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel. Family will be present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. to greet friends. Friends may send words of comfort to the family at www.herrmannfh.com Funeral Service will be Thursday, May 23, 2019, 10:30 a.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Ash Creek, rural McCook, with Pastor Justin Hildebrand officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery. Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook entrusted with arrangements.
