Maxine Elllen Fischer, age 98, of McCook passed away at the Hillcrest Nursing Home on Monday, March 24, 2020. She was born April 9, 1921 in Denver, CO to Bernard and Theresa (Buckman) Abernathy. She attended and graduated high school in Denver and attended Business College. On May 11, 1940, she was united in marriage to Ernest "Ernie" Fischer. The couple was married for 64 years, before he preceded her in death on October 29, 2009. They owned the Fischer Toy and Ice Cream store in McCook until retirement. They made ice cream and caramel corn and the ever-famous Quickie Burger. Maxine was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society. She crocheted many afghans, was an avid Bingo player, going out almost every night to play. Maxine loved her two Shih Tzu dogs. After retirement, Maxine and Ernie would travel for the winters to Florida. Maxine moved back to McCook in 2009 after Ernies death. Due to health concerns Maxine resided at the Hillcrest Nursing home for the past 5 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Theresa; brother, Hurlas Abernathy; grandchild, Debbie Law. She is survived by her two daughters: Mary Law of Jacksonville, FL; Barbara and husband Bill Elliott of McCook, NE; two sons: David and wife Rosemary Fischer of Jacksonville, FL; Terry Fischer of Portland, OR; eight grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Visitation for Maxine will be held on Thursday March 26, 2020 from 10:00 am till 5:00 pm. Graveside services will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE on Friday, March 27, 2020. Memorials may be left in Maxines name to the St. Patricks Catholic Church in McCook. Friends may leave on-line condolences at herrmannfh.com.
