Mary Ann Eklund

Mary Anne Eklund, age 87, of McCook, NE passed away at Hillcrest Nursing Home on Friday, May 5, 2017. Mary was born January 4, 1930, in Kansas City, MO, was orphaned at an early age, until around the age six or seven, when she and her sister were adopted by Sylvia Dorweiler. Mary graduated from Good Council High School at Mankato, MN. She then attended Mercy College of Nursing in Des Moines, IA. After graduating, Mary moved to Omaha, NE to work at the Veterans Hospital. While in Omaha, she met Delbert Eklund on a blind date. The couple was married June 7, 1952 at St Johns Chapel on the Creighton University Campus. Delbert preceded her in death on November 8, 2001. Mary worked at St. Catherines Hospital in McCook, when the kids were young. She also worked for the Red Cross Blood Mobiles, taught Medical Aide classes at McCook College, worked in Red Willow County Home Health and served as a school nurse doing health assessments. She was an active member of the St. Patricks Catholic Church, Altar Society, taught Bible study groups, and Religious Education. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts when her boys were growing up. She enjoyed playing the piano. Mary belonged to the Community Concert Association. Mary and Delbert traveled the world together including Europe, Bahamas, Mexico and most of the United States. Preceding her in death were her mother, Sylvia Dorweiler; her husband, Delbert; and sister, Anita. She is survived by her five sons: Christopher Eklund of Durham, NC, Joseph and wife, Amy Eklund, of Berrien Springs, MI, Mike Eklund of McCook, Tom and wife, Valerie Eklund, of Trinidad, CO; and Peter Eklund of McCook; one daughter, Anne Eklund of Sioux Falls, SD; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be left in Marys name to the McCook Community Hospital Hospice. Visitation will be held at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, May 8, 2017, from 9:00 AM until after the Rosary which will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Friends may send words of condolences to the family at www.herrmannfh.com Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Patricks Catholic Church in McCook on Wednesday May 10, 2017 at 11:00 AM with Father Gary Brethour officiating.
