We are broken hearted and completely heartsick to inform you that Marvin Loyd Metzer, a father, brother, and friend, passed away on December 4, 2023 at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. He was 96 years of age. Marvin was admitted to the hospital with COVID and pneumonia. He put up a good fight, but sadly succumbed to the weakening of his body that the illness caused. He will be sorely missed by so many. Marvin was born on November 27, 1927 in Culbertson, Nebraska to Loyd and Clara (Wagner) Metzer. He attended school in Culbertson and graduated from Culbertson High School. Marvin honorably served in the United States Navy from 1945-1947; he was an aircraft mechanic. His job required him to taxi the planes around; he loved the rumble and the roar of the engines and would always say that he just wanted to take off in one of them. After his honorable discharge, Marvin began his career as the Superintendent of Mail for the United States Post Office, he would retire in the position. After Marvin retired from the Post Office, he went back to work at Chico State University in Chico, California. At the university he worked in the mailroom and delivered mail to many different offices and departments. To those of you that knew Marvin, well can you just imagine how many friends he made? When he retired from the university, not only was the mailroom decorated and having a goodbye party for him, but every department and office he delivered to was having a goodbye party for him as well even though they knew he wouldnt be able to stay long. Many of you are aware that Marvin loved running and that he ran almost every single day until failing health and congestive heart failure made it impossible. Marvin tried to run in every marathon within driving distance. He placed first in his age group many times and he would always joke that it was because he was the only one running in his age group (He wasnt). Running was a big part of his life and he loved it. He will be so missed by so many! Preceding Marvin in death were his parents, Clara and Loyd Metzer and hiss sister, Thelma Brenning and her husband, Kenneth. Marvin is survived by his daughters Lisa Chapin and her husband, Charlie of Meridian, Idaho and Lynn Metzer Villanueva and her husband, Ray of Rocklin, California; his nieces, Nancy and Julie Ward and Melissa Lamber of McCook; and his dear, dear friend, Tracy Flaska of McCook. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 from 10AM-6PM at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. The family will be present to greet friends from 4-6PM.
