Marvin Leroy Harms of McCook, formerly of Culbertson, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Community Hospital. He was 81 years old. Marvin was born on April 17, 1936, at Brule, Nebraska to parents, Dick and Thelma (Dressler) Harms. As a baby he was baptized in the Brule Lutheran Church and later confirmed there. He graduated from Brule High School in 1953. After his mother passed away his father eventually remarried and moved the family to Gothenburg. It was there that Marvin met and married Betty Lou Aden on June 16, 1957. To this union four children were born. They made their home in Gothenburg until 1974 when the family moved to the Culbertson community. Marvin worked for Perry Grain and McCook Equity until starting his own business, Southwest Fertilizer. Marvin was a member of Culbertson St. Johns Lutheran Church where he served as trustee and later attended McCook Peace Lutheran after their move to Highland Park Assisted Living. He served on the Culbertson City Council and was Mayor for some time. He was also a volunteer on the Culbertson Fire Department and Ambulance. He was an integral part of organizing, boxing, and delivering Christmas boxes of groceries thru Mid Nebraska Community Service for both Culbertson and Trenton communities for families in need. A project and passion he provided for 25 years. Marvin was known for his unremitting hard-work, his honesty and man of his word where a hand-shake was all that was needed, his strong faith in his Savior, his strong- willed character which got him through lifes hardships and adversities, and most of all his love for people especially his family. He was a fun-loving guy, loved demolition derbies and won every once in a while. Playing tricks on his friends was also something he was known for. Some didnt appreciate it, but always seemed to get even. He loved including his family in his work and also in worshipping his God. Everyone in his family will miss him greatly, but we know he is in a better place. Preceding him in death were his parents, Dick and Thelma Harms; step-mother, Rixtie; and son, Alan L. Harms in 2003. Survivors include his wife of 60 years Betty Harms of McCook; three daughters, Shari and husband, Jim Lewis, of Culbertson, Susi and fianc, Don Bolt, and Peggy and husband, Wayne Needham, all of McCook; daughter-in-law, Sandra Harms of McCook; sister, Helen Johnson of Grant; seven grandchildren, Alexis (Matt) Davidson, Austin (Chandra) Lewis, Alyssa (Todd) Bauer, Jake (Kali) Curl, Luke Curl, Aimee (Mitch) Hazlitt and Drew Harms; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
