Marjorie Lorene (Covert) Schlegel, 90, passed away Sunday (February 23, 2020) in Oberlin, Kansas after a very short stay at Good Samaritan Society. Until a few weeks ago, she was residing in her home on the family farm in Hitchcock County. She was born July 28, 1929 to Floyd M. and Doris M. (Jennings) Covert in Culbertson, NE. She grew up in Culbertson, attending school and graduating from Culbertson High School in 1946. She was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson. She was active in the Nebraska Shorthorn Lassie Association, Extension Club, Culbertson Womans Club and Red Hatters. On June 8, 1947, Marjorie married Darold W. Schlegel. They were blessed with four children: Douglas, Timothy, Kristi and Michael. The couple made their home and raised their children on the family farm in Red Willow and Hitchcock counties. Marjorie was an active participant in the running of the family farm, including bookkeeping duties, which she really enjoyed, and managing the registrations and sales of the purebred Shorthorn bulls they raised. She also loved to bake, cook and crochet. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Doris Covert; her father and mother-in-law, Willard and Helen Schlegel; husband, Darold on August 10, 2003; son, Douglas on May 8, 2007; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Harry Fahrenbruch and Betty and Warren Clark; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gernadine and Gene Bortner. Survivors include her children, Tim Schlegel and wife, Kathy, of Centerton, AR; Kristi Schlegel of Aiken, SC; and Mike Schlegel and wife, Carol, of Culbertson; grandchildren, Megan (Chuck) Mayo, Gravette, AR, Kelly (Jeff) Burks, Little Rock, AR, and Matt (Tricia) Schlegel, Omaha, NE; 13 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Culbertson on Friday, February 28, 2020 at 3:30 pm with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. Interment will be in the Culbertson Cemetery.
