Marjorie Ruth Jeanne Petefish, Lincoln, formerly of Cambridge, died June 20, 1914 at Tabitha Hospice. She was born October 27, 1918 to John E. and Gertrude (Lyman) Jenkins in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She attended school in Bartlesville until she was 10 when the family moved to Denver, Colorado. In 1936 she graduated 4th in a class of 48 from Lakewood High School and received a scholarship to Colorado Womens College. Her advisor told her she shouldnt be a teacher but she didnt listen to him. In 1938 she earned an associate degree. In 1939 she entered Colorado State University, Fort Collins and graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She began her teaching career at Boone, Colorado. She also taught at Littleton, Yuma, Holly and Wiley. She married Ralph W. Petefish on January 26, 1948. In September 1954, Ralph and Marjorie moved to Cambridge, Nebraska.
Marjorie was raised by Christian parents in the Baptist church and accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at an outdoor evangelistic service. She was baptized in the First Baptist Church, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She met her husband through Baptist Youth Fellowship. After moving to Cambridge, Ralph and Marjorie joined St. Pauls Lutheran Church where she was an active member. She served as Sunday School Secretary for several years and held offices in LWML.
After the birth of her second child she taught half days in Holbrook for the 1958-59 school year. In 1964 she returned to Holbrook and continued there until she retired in 1985. She was a class sponsor, Junior-Senior Prom sponsor, but her greatest joy was the Future Homemakers of America. She took great pride in the fact that her members were active in local, district and state meetings and held various district or state offices. Through the years she has taught English, Journalism, Spanish, Biology and Chemistry. She belonged to NEA, NSEA, Cambridge Womens Club, Spinner Club, Marthas Circle at Messiah Lutheran in Lincoln and Red Hatters at The Lexington Assisted Living Center. She led a 4-H group for 10 years, judged at county fairs, was involved in the "Make It With Wool" contest. Through the years she enjoyed macram, embroidery, ceramics, leather work, stained glass work and cross stitch. After retiring she began making handkerchief quilts from her mothers hankies. Each child, grandchild and great-grandchild has received a quilt made by Marjorie. When presented with an incredible challenge she faced it with dignity and courage. She began teaching herself Braille and worked with a talking program on her computer. She enjoyed many talking books having been an avid reader all her life. She also spent many hours in prayer for her family and friends.
Ralph and Marjorie enjoyed traveling and made trips to Albuquerque for the hot air balloons, Hot Springs, Arkansas, Kentucky, Minneapolis and Canada to visit friends. They enjoyed a cruise through the Panama Canal which her father had worked on for two years. They also took cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean Islands. They enjoyed camping and were able to share the experience with grandchildren and other family members. They also enjoyed riding bicycles in the Cambridge area and rode the 100 miles to Colby in a two day trip.
In 2002, she and Ralph moved to Lincoln to an assisted living facility because of Ralphs health. She choose not to be separated from Ralph and joined him at the residence after their home in Cambridge was sold and an auction was held. They enjoyed many activities together and she continued to play Bingo, attend Bible study, exercise class and concerts after Ralph passed away.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law, Allie Petefish, sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Vernon Adkins, and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Edna Beck.
She is survived by her children, Nancy Mikesell and husband, Merrel, of Colby, Kansas, Linda Meduna and husband, Louis of Lincoln, Nebraska and John Petefish and wife, Shelley of Little Rock, Arkansas, 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 26th, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Friday morning from 9:00 AM AM to 11:00 AM. Family members will be present for visitation. Casket will not be at the church.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 27 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Cambridge at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Donald Jenkins officiating.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Tabitha.
