Marilu Sellens Delano, of McCook NE, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was born on March 15, 1927 in Susank, Kansas. Her parents were Henry Martin Sellens and Florette Lord (Overholt) Sellens. She graduated from Hoisington Kansas High School in 1945, and in August of that year, she married Dura Roosevelt Delano, Jr. They had five children, Alan (Pauline) of Decatur Tennessee, Robert (Martha) of Kerens Texas, Keith (Kara) of McCook, Michael of Colorado Springs, and Linda (Carolyn) of Phoenix Arizona. As a young woman, Marilu clerked for a legislator in the Unicameral at the Nebraska State Capital and was invited to continue working for that Representative in Washington D.C. She chose a different path and following stops in Hastings and back in Lincoln, her young family eventually settled in McCook. She spent more than 30 years working for the McCook Daily Gazette in a role she often described as The Funny Editor. With a sharp wit and keen eye for the unusual, Marilu could always be counted on for a snarky comment at the best time. Regarding this recent development she would probably say, "It was bound to happen" She had more common sense than mostand we would often say maybe she got some that should have gone to other folks. Marilu knew most birds both by sight and song, loved reading, and trips to Hawaii. She was proud of her family and the fun times they had together, particularly the time spent outdoors. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a past President of the Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does. A lifelong champion of equal rights, she was pleased that this great country had a credible female candidate for its highest office. Marilu is preceded in death by her parents and Dell, her husband of 70 years. She is survived by all five children and eight grandchildren (Travis, Beth, Rachael, Marsha, Jeff, Jake, Craig, and Shea), as well as 20 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. There will be a Visitation on Friday, September 11 from 1:00-8:00pm, and services will be held on Saturday, September 12 at 2:00pm CDT at the United Methodist Church in McCook.
