Leona C. Nelson

Leona Nelson, age 83, of McCook passed away at her home on April 23, 2019. She was born in Decatur County, Kansas on November 20, 1935, to Arthur and Elsie (Wesch) Berndt. She attended grade school in Cedar Bluffs, Kansas and graduated from the Decatur Community High School in Oberlin, Kansas in May of 1953. She met her high school sweetheart, Cecil Nelson at Oberlin Assembly of God Church where they were married August 21, 1953. They lived in Oberlin where they remained while two sons, Wayne and Gene Nelson, were born. Leona was employed by Wolfe, Bremer, Meyer and Morgan, Attorneys at Law. They moved to McCook, Nebraska in 1971. Leona was employed at the McCook Daily Gazette for almost 20 years. She was a devout member of the First Assembly of God Church for many years, being active teaching Sunday School and in many other facets of the church. "Grandma" and friend to all, Leonas faithful prayers stretched out to all those she encountered. When the time came, Leona promptly answered the call to being a full time grandma, not only to her grandkids but also to her great grandson Walker. She loved having the opportunity to take care of her babies while their parents worked. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cecil; sisters, Marjorie Meixner and husband Harold, Bonnie Drews and husband Melvin, Thelma Hawkins and husband Tom, and brother-in-law Gordon Nelson. She is survived by her sons, Wayne and wife Kristine, Gene; four grandchildren, Melissa Nelson, Cameron Nelson and wife Christy, Karmon Coleman and husband Clint, Lesley Borger and husband Erik; six great grandchildren, Landon, Bryce, Walker, Emersyn, Magnus, and Maria; one brother, Arthur Berndt and wife Judy, and one sister, Lois Nelson, along with many other relatives and friends. Services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church of McCook with Pastor Barry Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the MEmorial Park Cemetery.
