Leon E. Wright, age 78, of Indianola, NE, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on June 23, 2021. He was born in Dodge City, KS on June 12, 1943, to James and Jessie (Schofield) Wright. The family moved to St. Francis, KS where Leon attended school. Leon attended Central Technical College at Hastings and studied welding. He later went to the University of Nebraska and studied concrete construction and concrete. On December 23, 1960, he was united in marriage to Sarah Mortimore in Curtis, NE; the couple celebrated their 60th anniversary in December. Leon and Sarah were blessed with four children: Jackie, Verlyn, Brenda, and Michael. Leon owned and operated Wright Concrete and worked construction for most of his life. Clarence Stritt needed someone to dig a grave in Indianola and he contacted Leon; after that time, Leon began digging graves all over southwest Nebraska and continued for over 35 years. At the last, Leon was digging graves in 32 different cemeteries. Leon was a member of the Blue Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Bartley and McCook, Tehama Shrine, the McCook Elks, and he was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He built many commercial buildings, pouring concrete in Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska. Leon took great pride in his work. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle when he was not working. Leon and Sarah would take off and ride to the west coast alone or many times with friends. He was an avid rider for over 60 years. Leons pride and joy were his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed teaching them about work ethic, the farm, and how to drive his backhoe. Leon was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne (Mary); three sisters, Darline (Dale), Nadine (Charles), and Letha (Frank); sisters-in-law, Karen Mortimore and Evelyn (Dan) Hinton; brothers-in-law, Pat Mortimore, Clarence (Blythe) Mortimore, and Little Mahlen Mortimore. Leon is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah of Indianola; two daughters, Jackie (Rusty) Park of McCook and Brenda (John) Dickinson of Austin, TX; two sons, Verlyn Wright of Indianola and Michael (Jodie Boden) of Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two brothers, Keith (Judy) Wright of Hutchison, KS and David (Jenny) Wright of St. Francis, KS; brothers-in-law, Harvey (Kathy) Mortimore of Bridgeport, NE and Ben Mortimore of Scottsbluff, NE; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Mortimore of Torrington, WY. Funeral Service will be held at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. with Jim Jones officiating. Visitation will be Friday, June 25, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Indianola Cemetery.
