Lawrence "Larry" Robert Schoenauer Sr., age 69, of Stratton, passed away at his home on March 1, 2020. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on April 13, 1950, to Marion Ownby and Mae Carrie (Tetzlaff) Schoenauer. After graduating from Adams City High School in Commerce City, Colorado, Larry served in the US Marine Corp in 1968, reaching the rank of Sergeant before being Honorably Discharged. He then joined the US Army serving in Viet Nam, being Honorably Discharged in 1977. While in the Army, he received the Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Larry married Martha Gilbert, to this union two children were born: Romona Dawn and Larry, Jr. He later married Tammy Walkenshaw and to that union, three children were born: Diane, Dana, and Zach. Larry was a master furrier that designed fur coats and garments. He was a member of the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department from 1993 to 2001. He was also a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints of McCook. In his community, he was known as a connoisseur of ice cream, good literature, enjoyed volunteering at the food pantry, and spending time with his family. As part of scouts and leader, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and metal detecting. Larry worked for Hitchcock County Schools in the kitchen and for Trenton Public Schools as a custodian. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Mae; sister, Judy Vinzant; brother-in-law, Don Vinzant; grandson, Lawrence Robert Schoenauer III. Larry is survived by his children: Romona Dawn (Ross) Miner of Madison Heights, MI; Larry (Natalie) Schoenauer of South Detroit, MI; Diane (Paul) Bohochik of Stratton, NE; Dana (Anthony) Sandmeier of Highmore, SD; Zach (Sunni) Schoenauer of Slidell, LA; and eight grandchildren. He was also known as Uncle Larry and Grumps to numerous nieces, nephews, and friends that he cared about very much. In keeping with Larry's wishes, he was cremated and a private family service will take place in the future.
