LaVonne Benton, a long-time resident of McCook, died Tuesday, the 19th of June at Hillcrest Nursing Home, at the age of 100 years old. She was born July 29, 1917 at Shubert, Nebraska to Oscar and Mina (Helmick) Weddle. LaVonne graduated from Shubert High School and attended business college in Kansas City Missouri. On September 9, 1944, she was married to Willard D. Benton. Willard passed away July 8, 1983. LaVonne was associated with banks in Kansas City and later joined the First National Bank of McCook, where she was employed for 22 years and retired in 1982. She was also a co-owner, with her husband, of Clapps Store for Women. LaVonne was a member of the First Congregational Church of McCook, Nebraska TTT Society, Chapter B, a former member of the McCook Business and Professional Womens organization, and McCook Cordials. On October 27, 2000 LaVonne married Keith Sheldon. Keith passed away on June 11, 2003. Preceding her in death were her husbands, her parents, three sisters and two brothers, three nieces and a nephew. Survivors include son, Gary Benton and wife Lisa of Galveston, Texas; daughter, Beverly Embrey and husband Rick of Sheridan, Wyoming; granddaughter, Torie Benton of Houston, Texas; two nieces, three nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. LaVonne loved to read, travel, and enjoyed card games with her friends. Her smile and kindness to others will truly be missed. Memorials may be given in her name to Saint Jude Childrens Research Hospital at 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis Tennessee 38105. Visitation will be Sunday, June 24, 2018 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel. Family will be present at this time. Funeral services will be Monday, June 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of McCook with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Burial service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook, Nebraska. Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook entrusted with arrangements.
