Larry Dean Borland age 74, of Cambridge, passed away at the Community Hospital in McCook NE, on March 22, 2017. He was born in Benkelman, NE on November 21, 1942, to Roy and Julia E. (Johnson) Borland. When Larry was 2 years of age his father was killed in a mining accident and Julia, son Perry, daughter Jean, and Larry moved from Leadville, CO to Imperial, NE. Larry's mother married Harold Woods in 1948 and a son Chester, was born. Larry graduated from Chase County High School in 1961. While in high school he participated in track, qualifying for the State Track Meet all four years and earning team points in the 440-yard dash and the 1-mile relay. He attended Hasting College for one year and Chadron State College for 3. Larry graduated in 1965 with a BA degree in music education.

Larry then taught at Wymore-Southern High School for 15 years while continuing his education and getting a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1970. Larry was always very artistic. He made the sets for many of the school musicals and plays that he directed. On August 3, 1968, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Hofferber in Geneva, NE. at the Geneva Methodist Church. To this marriage, four sons were born Christopher Allen, Brian Scott, Gregory Todd, and Bradley James. After a short teaching career in McCook Larry decided a change was in order. During the summer of 1976, he attended the Denver Floral Academy. Larry and Carolyn moved to Cambridge, Nebraska that August where Carolyn taught Family Consumer Science and Larry opened Borland's Floral and Gift. Larry was always community minded. In Cambridge, he directed and starred in many community melodramas. He was a member of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and served several terms as the President. Larry was a 50+ year member of the United Methodist Church and was very active in the local church and men's group. He served many years as the Choral Director along with decorating the church sanctuary for seasonal changes and holidays. He was a member of the Nebraska Florists Society and retired in 2004 when he sold the shop. Larry enjoyed gardening, yard work, crafts, and woodworking. In retirement, he would travel to Omaha at Christmas time to design and decorate homes for private clients. He was always present at all his family activities at school whether it be academic or sporting events. Many times Larry was kidded about losing his voice after various play-off game. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Julie & Roy, his step-father Harold Woods and, his brother Perry Borland. Larry is survived by his wife: Carolyn of Cambridge; 4 sons: Chris and wife Cindy Borland of Cambridge; Brian and wife Kristine Borland of Olathe, KS; Greg and wife Bobbie Borland of Fremont, NE; Brad and wife Becky Borland of Omaha, NE; 8 grandchildren: Gavin and fiance Kate, Tyler, Alex, Kayla, Kyle, Kailee, Evie, and Jack; sister; Gloria Jean Borland and friend Helen Bailey of Laramie, WY; step-brother Chester and wife Marcie Woods of Westminster, CO; sisters-in-law: Judy Borland of Holyoake, CO; and Rosemary Hofferber of Kearney. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastors Jeff Wulf and Art Phillips officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017, at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be left in Larry's name to the United Methodist Church or The American Alzheimers Association.
