June Agusta Kern

April 11, 1941 — April 3, 2017

June Agusta Lorimor was born on April 11, 1914 in Anderson, Iowa. She passed away on April 3, 2017, about a week short of her 103rd birthday at the Brookdale Senior Living Center in McCook, Nebraska. She was the firstborn child and daughter of Carl Ellsworth Lorimor and Ruby Josephine (Miller) Lorimor of Bartlett, Iowa. June was a precocious and independent child, and being the oldest of seven siblings, developed into a second mother for her younger siblings when their mother passed away early in life at the age of 45. June graduated from Barlett High School in 1932 where she was an honor student, played on the girls basketball team, played violin in the band and sang in the Glee Club. She then attended and graduated from Peru State College in 1934 where she earned her teaching degree. After a year of teaching in a country school she returned to her hometown of Bartlett to teach where she also coached the Barlett girls basketball team to County championships. In 1937, June had the opportunity to teach school at Culbertson, a town in western Nebraska. She traveled by train to Culbertson and became a teacher of the 4th grade. It is in Culbertson she met her husband, Everett Malone Kern, a local resident and farmer. June and Everett were married in April of 1939 and made their home on the Kern farm where they raised three children, Kim, Kathy and Bud. June was a busy farm wife and was active in the United Methodist Church where she served for a time as President of the United Methodist Women and where Everett directed the choir and June sang and played piano. The two of them would play and sing as a duet for many years at church, funerals, weddings and other events. She was a member of the local Womens Club, Church Circle, belonged to two bridge clubs and sang in a womens trio. She was also active in her childrens activities. June was blessed with an amazing memory and could recall events and happenings from throughout her life. She was often called upon to recall names of individuals from the past and their whereabouts, history and life stories. She could recall her and Everetts family trees with vivid detail of each relatives origin, life story and progeny. She became an unofficial historian of Culbertsons history and residents. She had many friends in the community and was always concerned with other peoples wellbeing but never her own. She remained a strong woman, physically, mentally and emotionally throughout her later years and was known for her independence, wisdom and sense of humor. Preceding her in death was her husband, Everett; her daughter Kathy (Orr); her parents; her brothers, Aldin, Merritt, Truman, Evans and Newell; and her sister Wilma (Moore). June is survived by her son Kim and his wife Lana of Tulsa, Oklahoma; their son J.D. and great- grandchildren Rex, Sterling and Remy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; her son, Bud and his wife Penny of Scottsdale, Arizona; her grandson, Chris Cartwright and his wife Stephanie of Elkin, North Carolina; and her granddaughter Kelli Cartwright of Lake City, Minnesota. Memorials may be given in her name to the Culbertson United Methodist Church.
