Evaline Joyce Hershberger was born in Sedalia, Colorado, on May 20, 1931, to Joseph Scott Miller and Evaline Dorothy Fredrick Miller, in a snowstorm so bad the doctor had to stay with them over night following her birth. After her parents divorced, she lived with her grandparents, Mae and Eddie Wimmer, in Rocky Ford, Colorado. In 1944 they relocated to Kearney, Nebraska for her grandfather’s job. After WWII, she lived with her mother and stepfather in Denver, where she graduated from East High School.
Joyce attended the University of Colorado, where she met and married her husband, Floyd Hershberger. They made their home in McCook, Nebraska, where Floyd owned Hershberger Music, and Joyce taught piano for 57 years. Additionally, she was the organist at First Congregational Church for more than 45 years. Joyce was a member of PEO Chapter X, a past president of the Matinee Music Club, and was a piano accompanist for numerous Community Chorus performances and Community Theater musical productions. Joyce always had a dog as a companion and could be seen out walking them multiple times each day.
Joyce was surrounded by family when she peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at her home in McCook. She was 94 years old.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; her husband of nearly 60 years, Floyd, in 2011, her daughter, Laurie, in 1994, and her sister, Mickey, in 2013.
Survivors include a son, Brad and his wife, Angie Hershberger, a daughter, Bonnie Coffman and her husband, Randy, five grandchildren including: Chelsey (Corey) Nichols, Sean (Abby) Hershberger, Taylor (Emily) Hershberger, Jason Payne, and Rory Kristin Sykes (Trevor); as well as four step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel on Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM; Joyce's family will be present to great friends from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2:30 PM on Friday, April 10, 2026 at the First Congregational Church in McCook. A private family burial in Memorial Park Cemetery of McCook will take place prior to services.
