John Bauer, Jr.

John Bauer, Jr. of McCook, formerly of Culbertson, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Hillcrest Nursing Home surrounded by his family. He was 85 years old. John was born at Culbertson to John and Mary (Hock) Bauer, Sr., on February 8, 1931. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1948 and continued his education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln pursuing a degree in Ag Science. He entered the US Army on January 30, 1952 as Private 2nd Class serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on January 29, 1954. John was united in marriage to Virginia Ann Pollman on December 27, 1952 at Trenton. To this union four children were born. They made their home on a farm near Culbertson where they would spend most of their married life. John retired in 2010, however, remained active in the farming business and buying cattle for the family farm, spending hours at local sale barns. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for over 70 years at the time of his passing. He served on the Culbertson School Board for many years. While his children were younger he volunteered countless hours as a 4-H Leader, YF Leader, and baseball coach. He was an avid Husker Football Fan. His main passion in life was spending time with his grandchildren attending as many of their sports and activities as he could. Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Mary Bauer, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Sandra (Sitzman) Bauer; brother, Harvey Bauer; and sister, Mary Alice Grassmick. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Virginia Bauer of McCook; children, Alan (Culleen) Bauer of Seward, Terry (Kim) Bauer of Culbertson, Deb (Steve) Walter of McCook and Greg (Mindi) Bauer of Culbertson; nine grandchildren, Scott Bauer, Brett Bauer, Michelle Reimers, Jeremy Walter, Spencer Walter, Todd Bauer, Kayla Bauer, Tanner Bauer and Kori Bauer; seven great-grandchildren, six step- grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends. Memorials may be given in his name. Visitation will be Sunday, May 15, 2016, 3:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Friends may go online at www.herrmannfh.com to extend condolences to the family. Funeral services will be Monday, May 16, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with Rev.
