Jene Francis Custer

Jene Francis Custer of McCook, NE passed away Friday, January 12, 2018, surrounded by his family, at Great Plains Health in North Platte, NE. He was 77 years old. Jene was born on November 21, 1940 at Lynch, NE to parents, Harry G. and Rose M. (Wiley) Custer. As a small child, Jenes family moved to Arapahoe, NE where Jene would graduate from high school with the class of 1959. On June 27, 1959, he was united in marriage to Carmen M. Kitzing at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arapahoe. They made their home in McCook where they raised their four children, Kevin, Jeannine, Eugene, and Krystal. In 1973, Jene, along with Carmen, began their own business, J&C Plumbing and Heating. They made a life-long commitment to the McCook community for 44 years, retiring in 2016. Jene was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed Husker football, playing cards, traveling, and watching western shows and wrestling. He enjoyed family time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, especially taking them fishing, boating, and water skiing. Preceding him in death were his parents, Harry and Rose Custer; sister, Helen Bowers, brothers-in-law Leo Bowers and Lewis Stevenson; brothers, Don and Dennis Custer; sister-in-law Sarah Custer: and parents-in-law, David and Stella Kitzing; and also nephew, Larry Bowers. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Carmen Custer of McCook; his children, Kevin Custer and wife, Kathy; Jeannine and husband, Ed Rinehart; Eugene Custer; and Krystal and husband, David Downing, all of McCook; grandchildren, Donnie Rinehart and fianc, Brooke Brouillette, of Kearney; Angela and husband, William Watts, of McCook; Kylee and husband, Aaron Dorothy; and Danten Downing and wife, Britni, all of McCook; Dalton Downing and wife, Katie, of Oberlin, KS; and Elliott Huryta and fianc, Samantha Post, of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Zayden and Kruz Dorothy, Lola and Lane Downing, Kaelyn and Kaeden Downing; Tristen, Brayden, Skylar and Madison Watts, and two great grand babies on the way; brother, Duane Custer of Topeka, KS; sisters-in-law, Barbara Custer and Barbara Stevenson both of Lincoln; brother-in-law, David Kitzing and wife Beverly, of Lexington; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Memorials may be given in his name to KNGN Christian Radio. Visitation will be Thursday, January 18, 2018, 9:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. to greet friends and family. Funeral service will be Friday, January 19, 2018, 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, McCook, NE with Pastor David Kahle officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
