Janet Clare McNerny, 73, of Bartley, Nebraska, passed away December 29, 2015, at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. She was born May 2, 1942, in Goodland, KS, the daughter of Willard and Joan (Miller) Hartley. She spent her childhood in Sherman County, Kansas and was a 1960 graduate of Brewster (Kansas) High School. She later studied nursing at McCook Junior College. Janet is survived by her longtime partner, Bill Kentopp; three sons: Jim of Wheatridge, CO, Jeffrey, Thornton, CO, and Joel, Effingham, KS; four grandchildren: Brandon, Spencer, Jayden and Jakob; her mother, Joan Hartley, Neodesha, KS; three sisters: Judy Siruta, Goodland, KS, JoAnne Harper and husband, Terry, Neodesha, KS, and Jackie Witherspoon and husband, Gary, Shell Knob, MO.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, "sons" and "daughters", and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Willard, in 2008. Janet loved to read and volunteered for many years at the Bartley Library, where she especially enjoyed working with the children. She also enjoyed crafts and making gifts for family and friends. She was very proud of her rural heritage and enjoyed trips to the family farm until her health declined. A memorial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 4, at Kenner Memorial United Methodist Church in Bartley. Memorials are suggested to the Bartley (NE) Public Library or the Bartley (NE) Rescue Squad and may be left at the church.
