James 'Jim' Hunt

James D. Hunt was born on January 25, 1965 in New Castle, Wyoming to Elry and Doris (Howard) Hunt. He attended school in Benkelman, Nebraska and later Colorado. Jim lived for many years in Arizona before moving to McCook in April of 1996. He called McCook and the Southwest Area Training Center (SWATS) home for more than 27 years, Jim loved his life at SWATS; he made many lifelong friendships with the other residents and the staff. He touched countless lives, and his great sense of humor will be missed by everyone that knew him. Jim enjoyed bike riding, swimming, and basketball when he was younger. He participated in the Special Olympics. Jim loved and collected firearms. He had a miniature cannon as well two black powder rifles that he was proud of, but it wasnt necessary to fire any of them; that would just hurt his ears. Jims greatest passion was bald eagles, he collected many figurines and his favorite clothing usually had an eagle on it somewhere. James Hunt passed away at the Hillcrest Nursing Home of McCook on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. His loving family was by his side. He was 58 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elry Hunt and Doris (Howard) Albert. Jim is survived by his brother, Steve Hunt of Benkelman; sister, Shelley Christensen of St. Francis, Kansas; and nieces and nephews, Christopher Hunt of Victoria, Kansas, Audra (Scott) Rohn of Longmont, Colorado, Amy Christensen of Imperial, Nebraska, and Travis Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral services are scheduled for 1PM on Saturday afternoon, November 4, 2023 at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Pastor Lonnie Felcher officiating. Burial will follow services, in the Haigler Cemetery, Haigler, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to the Southwest Area Training Center in McCook. Online condolences may be left at herrmannfh.com.
