Harvey Spickelmier

Harvey Spickelmier, age 96, of Culbertson, Nebraska passed away at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook on January 25, 2019. He was born on July 16, 1922 on the family farm north of Culbertson in Hayes County. Harvey Dean Spickelmier was the son of William E. and Clara (Gaarder) Spickelmier. He grew up on the family farm, attended District #22 country school, and graduated from Hayes County High School in 1941. After graduation, Harvey bought an old truck and started his own company hauling grain and cattle for farmers in the area. On January 12, 1945, he was united in marriage to June A. Barger in Oberlin, KS. To this union five children were born: Russell, Carol, Merle, Norma and Dennis. In April of 1945, during WWII, Harvey chose to serve his country by joining the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the CBs (Construction Battalion). He served in Hawaii and later as part of the occupation Troops in Japan. He was Honorably Discharged on April 23, 1946. Upon return home, the family made their home on a ranch and continued farming in Lincoln County near Dickens. He later farmed in Frontier and Hayes Counties. Harvey and June raised their family on their farm for over 60 years in Hayes County. Harvey served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank for 26 years. He served on rural school boards: Dickens School Board, Frontier County and Hayes County School Board. Harvey and June traveled to all 50 states, Porta Rico and Canada. He was a member of the McCook Christian Church and a member of the Culbertson American Legion. Harvey and Russell participated in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. a few years ago. During this time Harvey connected with a former shipmate. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, June of 63 years; grandson, Benjamin Alloway; two daughters-in-law, Marilyn Spickelmier and Debbie L. Spickelmier; two brothers, Lester "Buck" and, wife June Spickelmier and Leo and, wife Mary Spickelmier; two sisters, Faye and husband, Lingle Graves, and Darlene and husband, Walter Bailey. Harvey is survived by three sons, Russell and, wife Joyce, of Culbertson, Merle of Hemingford, NE, and Dennis and, wife Julie, of Lincoln, NE; two daughters, Carol and husband, Rudy Alloway, of Phillips, NE and Norma Rogers of McCook; 11 grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the McCook Christian Church on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 2:00 PM with Rev Clark Bates officiating. Visitation will be held at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook on Tuesday from 10:00 Am till 7:00 PM. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM.
