Greg Hays

September 14, 1955 — February 3, 2025

Gregory J. Hays passed away on February 3, 2025 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He was 69 years young.


Greg was born in McCook, NE at the St. Catherines Hospital to Paul and Imelda (Kohmetcher) Hays. Greg received his education at McCook Public Schools, after graduating he then went on to Kearney State College to play baseball, that lasted one year.


Greg worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, Ecolab, and the VanDiest chemical company. He also worked for Southwest Public Schools as a bus driver until lung disease required him to quit. Greg and his wife Cindy owned their own Lawn business for 25 years.


Greg’s interests were golf, his Christmas decorations which earned him the nickname, Clark Griswold. He also loved following the grandkids in their activities. He loved teaching them new things, like golf and driving. Greg enjoyed going to his "West First Church", he loved being around friends watching football, volleyball and being a great debater. Greg loved his music, Pandora ran all the time.


Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Imelda Hays of McCook; in-laws, Melvin and Patty Meguire of Bartley, NE; aunts, uncles, and a great-nephew.


Surviving Greg are his wife, Cindy of Indianola; his boys, Ahren Hays and Carla of Waverly, NE, Neil Hays and Kori of Sterling, CO, and Dylan Hays and Krista of Oberlin, KS; step-kids, Justin McKenna and Dusty of Hastings, NE, Cami Koetter and Dustin of Hayes Center, NE, and Michelle McKenna of Omaha NE; grandkids: Ellie Hays, Emmarie Hays, Nathan and Briella Bose, Leon Hays, and another one due at the end of February, Trystin, Asher, and Piper McKenna, Hunter, Colton, Parker, and Peyton Koetter, and Micah McKenna; brothers, Phil Hays and Cyndi of Ft. Wright, KY and Mike Hays and Anna of McCook; sister, Charlotte Dunworth and Al of Culbertson; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and Ella, the best Service Dog he could ask for.


Cremation was chosen and a celebration of life gathering is scheduled for Friday afternoon, February 7, 2025 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Following the celebration of life, friends and family are invited to retreat to his "West First Church" for stories and memories. On Saturday, February 8, 2024 at 2:00 PM the Roundup in Indianola is hosting another gathering of his friends.
