Gene Mahon, age 78, of McCook, passed away peacefully at his home on October 5, 2020. He was born in Benkelman, Nebraska on October 7, 1941 to George and Lillian (Carlock) Mahon. He attended and graduated from Haigler High School in 1959. Gene then traveled to California in a car with $35.00 to chase his dreams. He attended Rio Hondo Community College, studying Criminal Justice. Gene became a member of the Buena Park Police Department and later the Los Angeles Police Department in California. Gene returned to McCook in 1974 to continue his career with the McCook Police Department. While in McCook, he attended McCook Community College and graduated with a degree in Law Enforcement. He then graduated from the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center and continued working for the McCook Police Department for 12 years. In 1986, Gene was elected Sheriff of Red Willow County. He served the community in that office until he retired in January of 2015. Gene was united in marriage to Janet (Lusk) Shepherd on March 9, 1979. He was instrumental in establishing the Red Willow Law Enforcement Center and Jail built in McCook. Gene was inducted into the Nebraska Sheriffs Associations Hall of Fame in 2015. He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church of McCook where he served on the security team as well as many other positions. He and Jan enjoyed traveling, especially on their motorcycle with friends. He was an avid Husker Fan, enjoyed golf and watching his grandchildrens activities. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillian Mahon and an infant brother, Larry. Gene is survived by his loving wife, Jan of McCook; three daughters: Kimberly Mahon of Santa Barbara, California, Tonya (Rich) Placzek of McCook, and Tami (Kevin) Darling of McCook; one son, David Mahon of Las Vegas, Nevada; five grandchildren: Tyra (Scott) Barger of McCook, Talia (Aaron) Sawyer of Papillion, Nebraska, Talon (Lindsay) Darling of Denver, Colorado, Taryn (Joel) Arterburn of McCook, and Tristian (Wyatt) Peterson of Denver, Colorado; 11 great-grandchildren: Kyson, Kreighton, Kroy, Tatum Jo, Preslee, Gwen, Norah, Bently, Harper, Drake, Landon and one due in December; brother, Wayne (Linda) Mahon of Haigler, Nebraska; as well as a host of other family and friends. Gene will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation for Gene will be held at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel on Friday, October 9, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at the Evangelical Free Church of McCook on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Donelan officiating. Burial will be held in the Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook. Memorials may be left in Genes name to a charity to be named at a later date. Friends may leave online condolences at herrmannfh.com.
