Gayle Lewis Kircher was born October 27, 1929 to Albert and Ola (Elms) Kircher on the family farm in rural Red Willow County, Nebraska. He lived a life characterized by dedication, hard work, and a deep connection to his faith and family.
Gayle graduated from Red Willow High School in 1947. Following high school, he served in the United States Air Force from December of 1950 to September of 1954. During his time in the military, Gayle achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded both the Good Conduct and National Defense Service Medals for his selfless service during a pivotal time in American history, the years of the Korean War.
After his military service, Gayle was united in marriage to the love of his life, Caroline O’Brien at St. Patrick Catholic Church in McCook, Nebraska on June 18, 1956. Soon after they married, the two moved to San Diego, California where Gayle was employed by Rohr Aviation from 1956 to 1959. Gayle’s passion for farming led him back to Indianola, Nebraska and his roots, where he dedicated the remainder of his life to farming the family farm. It was here that he cultivated not just the land but also meaningful relationships and memories, particularly through his beloved draft horses; he was a member of the Nebraska Draft Horse and Mule Association.
A member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianola, Gayle was known for his hardworking nature, an attribute that resonated throughout his life. He held a strong belief in the values of community and family; he cherished moments spent with his loved ones. Gayle left a legacy of caring for the land, strong family values, and a commitment to service.
Gayle passed away late Friday evening, December 12, 2025 at Kinship Point in McCook, Nebraska. He was 96 years of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Caroline; brother, Roger Kircher; and sister, Roberta Hansen.
Gayle's life was a testament to resilience and dedication, his memory will live on through his children: Douglas Kircher of Lincoln, Nebraska, Joan Kircher and husband, Paul Webb of Phoenix, Arizona, Susan Knight and husband, Jeff of Arlington, Virginia, and Angela Kircher of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Caroline Knight, Robert Knight, and Parker Bobo; brother, Ken Kircher and wife, Karen of Indianola; as well as a large extended family and many friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianola. A Rosary will follow visitation, beginning at 7:00 PM at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Wednesday morning, December 17, 2025 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Michael Houlihan celebrating. Burial in the St. Catherine Catholic Cemetery in Indianola will follow services.
Memorials in Gayle’s name are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Online condolences may be left at herrmannfh.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook.
