Florence Hegwood

Florence Loucille (Harrison) Hegwood was born on May 5, 1928, and passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022, at the age of 94. She was the second of four girls born to James and Anna Harrison in rural Dundy County, Neb. Florence attended grade school at the Eden grade school and graduated in 1945 from Stratton High School. She attended McCook college and received her teaching training. Florence taught in rural schools for four years. Florence married Milton Hegwood in Wauneta, Neb., on Sept. 2, 1951. To this union, three children were born, James (Jim), Jeanette, and Jerald (Jerry). After the birth of their children, they settled in Culbertson, where they continued to live for 65 years. Together they successfully owned and operated Hegwood Concrete. During her years, Florence maintained a daily diary, offering insight into her life. She blessed many people with her musical ability from family performances to weekly church services, often spur of the moment. In retirement, Florence maintained the weekly community news for the Hitchcock County newspaper. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, word searches, and jigsaw puzzles. But more importantly, Florence loved God and sought to serve and honor Him in her daily life with family. Florence was preceded in death by her parents; and son, James (Jim) Hegwood; sisters, Leona Hunt, Beulah (Keith) Harris, and Lois (Raymond) Bley; and brothers-in-law, Vernon Hunt, Keith Harris, and Raymond Bley. She is survived by her husband, Milton Hegwood; daughter, Jeanette Peters of McCook; son, Jerald (Jerry) Hegwood and wife, Janet of Aurora, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many family and friends. Visitation is Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, 3-6 p.m., (CT) at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook, Neb. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. (CT) Monday, Sept. 26, 2022, at New Life Fellowship in Culbertson, Neb. with Pastors Lloyd Bley and Rick Bradley officiating. Interment will follow services at the Culbertson Cemetery. Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
