Flora Jean Lundberg

Flora Jean Lundberg passed away Friday, May 29, 2015 at her home in McCook surrounded by her family, and long term caregiver. She was 90 years old. Flora was born on September 10, 1924 at Chicago, Illinois to parents, Earl E. Judy and Marie Propp. She graduated from McCook High School in 1942 and attended McCook Junior College. On April 14, 1948 she was united in marriage to L. John Lundberg. They made their home in McCook where they raised their three children. Flora was a busy mother and homemaker but also found time to manage KBRL Radio station for several years. In 1973 she became a licensed real estate salesperson holding the honor of being the first woman Broker in the Real Estate business known as Lundberg Main Street Realty in McCook, not retiring until the age of 88. She was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church where she was active in Youth Committee, president of Womens Fellowship, Chapter Leader, Deaconess, and member of the Vestry. She also taught Sunday school and served as Sunday School Superintendent. She was a licensed Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer and was successful in introducing a resolution to encourage the Bishop of Nebraska to consider the ordination of women into the priesthood. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, having served two terms as Worthy Matron of Eureka Chapter #86, McCook. She was a Representative of Past Matrons Club and advisor of McCook Assembly #11, Order of Rainbow for Girls for 25 years. Flora was a member of the McCook Business and Professional Women since 1974. She served as a national delegate and lobbied representatives on Womens rights, pay equity, social security equity and issues affecting farm women. Other memberships included Chapter B, T.T.T., Burlington Vets, Society of Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers; past president of Alpha Zeta Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and claimed the title of Beta Sigma Phi Girl of the year. She was a lifetime member of the PTA. Flora was given many honors throughout her lifetime including the Nebraska Business and Professional Womens state award, Sertoma Service to Mankind Award, Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska Award; and American Association of University Women State Award. In 1986 Flora was elected to the McCook city council and later was voted in as Mayor. She served for four terms and during that time was invited to the US Army for briefings on the Guard and Reserve at the Pentagon. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, L. John Lundberg; and son-in-law, Richard Cole. Survivors include her children, Robert (Donna) Lundberg of Lincoln, Deborah Lundberg Cole of McCook and Rhonda (Dean) Josten of Omaha; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be given in her name to The Pantry and / or Sertoma. The family will greet friends Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Memorial services will be Friday, June 5, 2015, 10:00 a.m., at St. Albans Episcopal Church in McCook with Pastor Brad Brauer officiating. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
