Esther Minnie Steinke passed away on October 29, 2018 at the McCook Community Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer and congestive heart failure complications. She was 94 years old. Esther was born on February 16, 1924 in Republic, Kansas to Friedrick Paul and Etta Grace Margaret (Agena) Skraback. She was the oldest of seven children. Esther married Harry Herman Steinke on June 3, 1941. Born to this union were five children. She was a lifelong farmwife, a caring housewife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Esther met Harry while working for Harrys mother, Pauline, cooking and serving meals for the crew of a neighborhood wheat threshing machine operation operated by Harrys father, Emil. Harry and Esther spent their lives farming south of Trenton, NE. Harry passed away in 1981. Esther continued farming operations until she sold the family farm in late 1988. She then moved to McCook, NE and lived there until the time of her death. Esther enjoyed quilting, crafts and playing cards which included the Methodist Church ladies quilting clubs in Trenton and McCook, various craft groups and pinochle/pitch card groups in McCook. For several years she belonged to the BPOE Does organization in McCook. She sewed quilts for children and grandchildren as well as others. Esther was an excellent cook and willingly provided each child their favorite item/meal even after they moved away from home. Collecting dolls and teapots were among her favorite hobbies. While living in McCook Esther volunteered at the Methodist Church thrift shop Helping Hand. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Edwin and Roy Skraback; sister, Arlene League; several brothers/sisters-in-law; and a son-in-law, Joe Horinek. She is survived by sons Jerry (Ginny) Steinke of Brule, NE, Donald (Rita) Steinke of Windsor, CO, Richard Steinke of Lenora, KS, Roger (Kathy) Steinke of Olpe, KS, and daughter Colleen Horinek of Abilene, KS; sisters, Alberta Anderson of Reno, NV, Laveda Moses of Santa Ana, CA and Grace (Jim) Hockman of Boulder, CO; sisters-in-law Polly Steinke of Trenton, NE and Twyla Thomas of Wheatridge, CO. Also surviving are grandchildren Douglas (Becky) Steinke of Grand Island, NE, David (Kim Hildebrand) Steinke of Longmont, CO, Laura (David) Hodgson of Superior, CO, Michael (Tyra) Steinke of Phoenix, AZ, Austin Horinek of Abilene, KS, Amie (Alex) Horinek of Ablilene, KS, Cory (Destinee) Steinke of Holdrege, NE, Scott (Rebecca) Steinke of Olpe, KS and Crystal Steinke/Monk of Olpe, KS along with 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be given in her name. Visitation with family members present will be held at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on November 1, 2018. Funeral services will be held on November 2, 2018, beginning at 11:00 AM at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook, NE with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at the Trenton (NE) Cemetery. Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
