Ervin Bley

June 4, 1932 — August 28, 2022

Ervin Dean Bley was born on June 4, 1932 to Jacob and Katie (Duhm) Bley in Hayes County, Nebraska. He was the youngest of four children and attended Eden Country School near the family farm. He lost his mother at a young age and had to stay home and help on the farm. Ervin was inducted into the United States Army in 1953. He served for two years, fourteen months of which were in Korea. For his service to his country, he received the National Defense Services Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Ervin met Elaine Maris at the Eden Country Church in rural Wauneta and the couple married on August 1, 1956. To this union four boys were born. The family made their home 14 miles north of Stratton and later moved four miles west to the home place for several years. Ervin enjoyed watching his boys excel at football, basketball, and track. He loved taking them fishing and just watching his family grow. He attended lots of sporting events and was always grateful that being a parent taught him patience. Ervin was most at home on the farm caring for his crops and livestock, but he also enjoyed vacations to the Rocky Mountains. He enjoyed watching sports on TV and reading. The most important lesson that he learned in his life was to always be true and faithful. Ervin and Elaine moved to McCook in their retirement years. Declining health would force Ervin to move to Highland Park Retirement Community in McCook and then to the El Dorado Manor in Trenton. On Sunday, August 28, 2022 Ervin Bley passed away at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 90 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine in 2020; and his siblings. Survivors include sons: Gilbert Bley and wife, Kris, Leroy Bley and wife, Lanette, Lavern Bley and wife, Beth and Robert Bley; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Delbert Maris and wife, Roberta; and sister-in-law, Sandra Maris.
