Enid Vernelle (Boyer) Zapp, age 88, of McCook, led a full and joyful life and was deeply loved by her large family. She passed away on Thursday, May 5 at the Community Hospital of McCook. Enid was born in Danbury, NE on July 14, 1927 to Charles and Winona (Ruby) Boyer. In 1944, she graduated from Danbury High School. She attended Kearney State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate, and taught in rural schools south of McCook. Enid was baptized at Danbury Congregational Church on August 22, 1927. She was confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Culbertson in 1948. Enid joined the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook in 2003. Enid was united in marriage to Walter Zapp on January 19, 1947 in Oberlin, KS. Together they had six children. The couple made their home in Culbertson until 1988, when they retired and moved to McCook. She and Walter led an active life on and off their farm. They loved to go square dancing, and she sewed her own square-dance dresses. Every summer when it rained and Walter could turn off the irrigation, they would take a family vacation, and continued to travel in their retirement. In 2011, she moved to Hidden Pines to be near Walter, who lived in Hillcrest Nursing Home. Walter preceded Enid in death in 2012. A wise, patient and loving mother, her large family was deeply important to her. Her greatest joy was having all six children and their families around. She loved helping her granddaughters learn how to make pie, runzas, and her renowned potato salad. Enid enjoyed all types of card games, especially bridge and pinochle. She played the organ at Hillcrest Nursing Home, cross-stitched, and was an avid Husker football fan. She was a happy and accepting person who was grateful for what life and her family had given her. Enid was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter; brother Dick Boyer; and sisters Ardis Boyer, Charlene Duck, and Lois Zapp, who was married to Walters brother, Otto Zapp. Her surviving family includes her children: Tom Zapp and wife Mary of Higginsville, MO, Jerry Zapp and wife BAnne of Kearney, NE, Mike Zapp and wife Judy of Kearney, Pat Wagner and husband Ty of Culbertson, Ted Zapp and wife Velora of Culbertson, Jane Gilliam and husband Lee of Oberlin, KS; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three siblings: Roberta Johannes and husband Duane of Salina, KS, Ron Boyer and wife Kathy of Salina, and Allen Boyer and wife Vada of Loveland, CO.
